Dr Hefin Jones, a leading member of the Union of Welsh Independents, has been elected to the Administrative Committee of a movement that represents 80 million Christians world-wide. Over 225 churches and church unions belong to the World Communion of Reformed Churches. Its Administrative Committee has just 22 members – twelve women and ten men – and 60 names had been proposed by various churches and church unions.
The election was held during a conference organised by the Communion in Leipzig, Germany to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.
Born at Pencader, Carmarthenshire but now living in Cardiff, Dr Hefin Jones is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Biosciences at Cardiff University, Dean of Y Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol (The Welsh National College), and a leading environmental scientist and author. He’s also a member of Minny St. Independent Church, Cardiff and a former president of the Union of Welsh Independents.
‘We warmly congratulate Dr Hefin Jones on his election,’ says Dr Geraint Tudur, General Secretary of the Union. ‘Although we are a small nation, and a small Union compared with other members of the Communion, we firmly believe that we have something to contribute to the current international discussions about the faith, and the Christian endeavour to ensure justice and fair play for people in all parts of the world. We wish Dr Hefin well with his new responsibilities.’
