The Union of Welsh Independent has called on Cardiff City Council not to support an arms fair in the city in 2018. If the arms fair is held next March as planned, the Union will protest against the event. At its annual meetings in Ammanford delegates also agreed to call on all Welsh councils to refuse a home for the arms fair, should a request be made.
The motion was placed before the conference by the Revd Aled D. Jones on behalf of the Ceredigion Association of Independent Churches, and seconded by the Revd Guto Prys ap Gwynfor (pictured) who is also chair of the Independents’ Peace Network. They noted that the DPRTE (Defence Procurement, Research, Technology and Exportability) declared in their literature that the large companies who are known for producing weapons and selling them abroad, such as BAE Systems, Lockheed Martin and Boeing, will be “showcasing products and services along all parts of the supply chain”; and that BiP Solutions, the organisers of the event, declared“DPRTE 2018 will provide a unique opportunity to gain access to defence procurement buyers”. The speakers stated that such trade is immoral and that it is extremely sad that the sellers and buyers of these fiendish weapons are welcome in the capital city of our country.
Following a discussion, the delegates voted unanimously to oppose the buying and selling of weapons in our capital city – weapons which are currently being used to kill innocent people and destroy communities in places such as Yemen and Gasa.
