An online meeting of the trustees of Cytûn (Churches together in Wales) today confirmed the appointment of Dr Cynan Llwyd as General Secretary of Cytûn from 1 July 2024.
He succeeds the Revd Siôn Brynach who was Chief Executive of Cytûn until the end of April, and is now a full-time priest with the Church in Wales.
Cynan is a native of Aberystwyth but now lives in Grangetown in Cardiff with his wife Rachel and their two sons. He is a deacon at Ebeneser Welsh Congregational Church in Cardiff and one of the leaders of Angor Grangetown, one of the pioneer initiatives of the Union of Welsh Independents. He studied Welsh at Cardiff University and has an MPhil from Aberystwyth University and a PhD from Cardiff University where he researched The Doctrine of the Second Coming and the Millennium in the work of some of the Welsh Puritans and their social implications in Wales. He has extensive experience of working with churches and charities in Wales. He worked as a pastoral assistant at St Michael's and St Mary's churches, Aberystwyth, before being appointed Children and Young People's Officer for Literature Wales. He has worked for Christian Aid as South Wales Regional Coordinator and then Acting Head and is currently the Head of Tearfund in Wales. He is also an author, Gwasg Y Lolfa having published two of his novels for young people and his third novel is about to be published by Llyfrau Broga.
Cynan was warmly welcomed by the members at the meeting. The Chair of Cytûn, Revd Jennifer Hurd, said "It is very good to welcome Cynan as Cytûn's new General Secretary and to congratulate him on his appointment. I look forward to our working together while I serve as Chair of Cytûn Trustees, and may God bless Cynan's work with the churches in Wales so that we can draw closer together and work together for the sake of God's kingdom."
Cynan responded, "It is an honour and a privilege to be appointed General Secretary of Cytûn. I look forward to working together with the churches in Wales as we jointly seek God's will, for us to “be one as we are one" (John 17:22). It is an exciting and challenging time for us as churches and I pray that we will grow closer to God and to each other over the time to come."
